Happy Birthday Garrett (and Mom!!)

Today, is Garrett’s 6th birthday.  He has been waiting for this day since…ohhhh, his sister’s birthday, which was in September.  And we have counted down each day, faithfully, for almost two months.

Garrett loves birthdays.  He loves wishing people a happy one, cranking out a birthday tune or, generous boy that he is…offer to help them open their gifts.  Now that his special day is here, believe me, he is enjoying every minute!

Today is also my mom’s birthday.  She too loves birthdays.  However, being a gal with a passion for shopping, she enjoys the giving more than the receiving.

One characteristic that Garrett & my mom share is a tender heart.  Both are very compassionate people.  They care for those who hurt and are quick to give a hug.  They are both very merciful.  I have witnessed many times when they have extended forgiveness to another person and graced them with the opportunity for a second chance.

Both are living day brighteners.  I know I can call my mom anytime about anything & she’ll be there.  She has a gift for knowing what to say & when to say it.  She is ready to offer a listening ear as opposed to giving an opinion.  And no matter what, she’ll be the first to stand up not only for you, but beside you.

Garrett still crawls in my lap, tells me he has a secret and then whispers, “I love you Mommy.  You’re the best Mom in the whole world.”  See what I mean about mercy!  I never had to earn his admiration – he gave it freely.  But, I feel a huge responsibility not to let him down.  I know I fall short every day, and there are times when I’m too quick to lose my patience, but he loves me anyway…because I’m HIS mom.  I recently volunteered in his classroom.  When I walked in, he beamed and told his little friends, “That’s MY mom, not yours.”  Garrett, I pray that as you grow older, I will always make you proud to have me as your mom.  Because buddy, you and your brother and sister are the best gifts.  Every day is a birthday with you.

Next time you get in trouble, just remember to tell me that before I send you to timeout. 😉

Happy Birthday.

Love you both!

Happy Birthday Grady!

“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”

~ Proverbs 16:9

Adam & I planned on having three kids.  We planned when we wanted Ava.  And everything fell neatly into place.  We planned on Garrett.  Now, he came a little behind schedule, but not too far off plan.  We planned on having a third child.

Some day.

And not too far after Garrett’s first birthday, I discovered I was pregnant with Grady.  And there went the plan!

“You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.”

~ Proverbs 19:21

Today is Grady’s golden birthday.  And at the risk of sounding incredibly corny, this little boy has been more precious than gold to me.  I planned on waiting.  But, God knew I needed him now.

And He was right.

There are many things I adore about my 4-year-old.  Here are a few I’ll share today:

  • Grady makes me laugh.  I love the way he uses words that are completely wrong, but sound so impressive that he just has to use them (hmmm…I think he got that from me!).  He tells quite often that events are “seventeen twenty-nine days away.”
  • Grady constantly has his arms around me.  And let me tell you, he gives the best hugs!
  • Grady loves learning and he likes solving puzzles.  Oh my goodness, this boy waited sooooooooo long to go to school.  And he enjoys it so much.
  • Grady is constantly humming.  In fact, the “Darth Vader” theme is constantly resounding in our home.
  • Grady loves exploring & showing me all he makes and finds.  “Mommy, I want to show you something!”  I must hear those words at least four times a day.  When I pick him up from school, he is barely buckled in before tearing into his backpack, revealing what masterpiece he made that day.  When  grocery shopping, I know to add at least twenty extra minutes to our trip because of the various gems he finds…and tries to put into my cart.  Oh, how I would love to live by a creek – I can’t help but smile when I think about all the fun things he’d want to show me…frogs, turtles, slimy worms, twisted sticks just begging for a light-saber dual – I think he’d be in heaven!

And that’s part of what I treasure about Grady.  Not just his love for adventure, but his desire to take me along on his little journeys.  Grady has a light that radiates from within him.  And those touched by him…I think anyway…are left with moments that are brighter.

I still don’t know how we got Grady.

But, I’m so grateful we did.

I love you sweet boy.

Happy Birthday.
